Ben's Canteen

Ben's Canteen on St Johns Hill in Clapham is usually heaving most days and most definitely every weekend. You'd reckon that was the case because of their amazing food or maybe it's just the fact Gordon Ramsay has been seen eating there a few times, who knows why.. because it sucks..

It was saturday about 11am and the inside of my head resembled the day after a Michael Barrymore pool party. My friend's are i weren't feeling good and needed booze & food ASAP on this wonderfully sunny day. We only waited about 20 minutes for a table and were seen to quite quickly about drinks, which unfortunately were forgotten about, 15 minutes later they arrived (a pint & a bloody mary).

So lets get to the food, as far as the burgers went the beef, pork & chicken were juicy, the coleslaw inside the burgers was overloaded with mustard making the whole burger taste of mustard, no one enjoyed it and the sweet potato chips were a little sparse.  I ordered sweetcorn fritters with a poached egg as a side, the bacon was like rubber and the fritters were still raw and i couldn't finish them, they tasted of nothing but pancake batter with lumps of sweetcorn in them. I dont know where they get their eggs from but they're very average and tasteless, when other cafes use eggs like Burford Brown and other great quality eggs you'd think somewhere like Ben's Canteen would source their ingredients with a little more passion, it sets you apart from any old 'caff'.

All in all, disappointing. My fritters were free thank fuck.

Chicken Burger.

Pulled pork burger. (Just stick the fucking pickle inside)

Cheeseburger.

Sweet potato chips.

Sweetcorn fritters.

Shitty egg with basically no yolk.

PItt Cue Co.

Wow.Wow.Wow.

This place is honestly fan-fucking-tastic. So tiny that i've been in bigger toilets, cocktails are awesome and the meat is just incredible and tender. Went for lunch so we got a table but there's usually an insane queue. Short and sweet about this place, it's amazing and you should go there.

Soho Sour.

Jowl Scrumpet.

Lamb Brisket. Parsley, garlic & anchovy sauce.

House sausage & bone marrow mash.

Smashed celeriac & leeks.

Special for the day. Smoked ox cheek on sourdough.

<3

Check it out.

Dip & Flip

Lets get stuck in, Dip & Flip is OK. It's been around for a while now and we only got around to checking it out a couple months back (late post so i've forgotten a lot). What i do remember is how it wasn't that awesome, i found their Dip & Flip burger a little too sweet overall. This fucker consists of a cheese burger topped with roast beef or lamb that has been dunked in gravy, they come with a shitty little paper bowl of watery fucking gravy to dip your already sloppy burger into. Cool. Bugeracc gave this place 5stars the other day which matches up to Patty & Bun and also Meat Liquor, which i personally dont understand .. plus my friends loved it. Maybe i'm just a prick, who knows.

A nice moment was when i asked if they had wheat beers, as it turned out they had a few bottles of Blue Moon downstairs that were not on the menu. The waiter was a nice guy (possibly a manager).

As with the restaurant theres no real atmosphere and the music was too quiet.

This Clapham burger joint is hit or miss for me. Worth checking out, i guess as it's overall quite cheap.

This is Ben.

Shake.

And this is the one everyone's here for.

#M1LK

M1LK in Balham is pretty awesome, the staff are really fucking nice, everyone looks cool, the decor is sexy, the coffee is fantastic and the cornbread makes me feel like i'm climbing a rope*.  2 poached eggs, cornbread (instead of sourdough), 2 bacon, beans &  soya latte is about £13. The quality for me, make's that price OK. I've tried pretty much everything on the menu and i would recommend "The Convict" kind of a very special sausage and egg McMuffin or the "Sweet Maria" with bacon (Sweetcorn fritters).

The queue on the weekend is always out the door** and down the road, so i'd say get there early, get there late or get there at 12 and queue, depending on how hungover/hungry you are.

The Breakfast Club - Battersea Rise

Everyone loves breakfast right? So everyone's bound to love the breakfast club. I guess im not everyone...

The first thing you notice is how big the menu is, which i think is too big. Also the prices are a bit high for what you're actually getting, i found the pancakes floury, scrambled eggs a little over cooked, bacon looked like the shit you get at the end of the packet, herbs and onions in the home style fried potatoes are unwanted flavours on the plate. I've had people say they love it here, i guess its just not my thing.

Much rather go here.. http://www.goodlifediner.com/

"I've been told these are the best thing in shoreditch" Waiter : Far Rockaway Shoreditch

From Queens to Shoreditch...

Far Rockaway opened up on Curtain Rd, Shoreditch about a week ago and at first glance looks fucking awesome. The menu reads alright too, it actually gives the impression it could be pretty good which sadly it was not... Decor is rad though.

Far Rockaway Shoreditch is most certainly not a place to ever go for food. It's just an overpriced bar that does bad overpriced food. Theres amazing art and decor to enjoy with the addition of comics to read and ok-ish music playing in the background.

The service was pretty bad. The waiter forgot the first order of only 2 drinks and never put ice in our glasses, even at Mcdonalds im asked if i want ice.

One of the last things the waiter said to us after we complained about the food was "I think the thing is, the owner wanted it to be authentic american" ..  fucking lol.

Don't go here. Go for a cocktail at Hoxton Hotel or The Redchurch, have a pizza at Pizza East, get some deep fried prawns on Kingsland Road from one of the many amazing Vietnamese restaurants, get a burger from Byron... just don't go here!

When we left we noticed a seriously intense smell of piss which was a lovely ending to a fabulous night.

Cool.

:'(

These were great.

7 small over cooked deep fried shrimp which a tasteless bitter smoked tomato sauce. Not only are the plates an eyesore but the caramelized lemon really pissed me off. The waited suggest these, he said that they've been called "the best thing in Shoreditch", once he asked us what we thought of them he then told us only 2 people said that and he was sorry LOL. This was 10 quid by the way.

Tasteless (hot) chicken wings that weren't hot at all. Blue cheese dip that was actually garlic mayo, they then replaced the garlic mayo with more GARLIC MAYO after we watched the head chef argue that it was infact blue cheese dip. Who the fuck was he kidding.

Please restaurateurs! don't call them fries on the menu when they're not fries.

How do you like your burger buns? They like them dry here at Far Rockaway Shoreditch.

Halloumi burger, with peanut hummus and maple squash. (Apparently 'minus the bun' this wasn't too bad)

Frank & Beans. Honestly .. out of a tin actually tastes better.

£9 worth of meatballs right there.

Ok now this was £4 and is huge, only thing worthwhile actually eating here. Just gotta ignore the greasy basil leaf.
